How to Deposit Checks by Mail at ING Direct
As a followup to yesterday’s post about depositing scanned checks, I wanted to share a tip for depositing checks into your ING Direct account.
Because ING Direct doesn’t yet support the uploading of check images, I’ve typically deposited checks at my local bank and then initiated an ACH transfer. If you’d like to cut out that extra trip to the bank, then read on…
Depositing checks by mail
For starters, endorse the check. Before signing your name, you should write “For Deposit Only into Account {your acct #}” (fill in your real account number). On the memo line, you should also be sure to include your customer number.
Note: For those that are unaware, your customer number isn’t the same as your account number(s). Your customer number is like a username, though you can now create an alphanumeric username. Once logged in, you’ll see the numbers associated with your individual accounts.
If you’re uncomfortable including all of this information on the check, which will likely be returned (either physically or as a digital image) to the check writer, then you should simply write “For Deposit Only” above your signature on the back and enclose a note with your account number.
Either way, it’s a good idea to include your customer number on the check itself so they can track you down if something goes awry.
Once it’s ready, mail your check to:
ING DIRECT
P.O. Box 60
St. Cloud, MN 56302-0060
While it will take a few days to arrive, your check should be posted immediately upon receipt by ING Direct. Yes, you’ll have to pay for a stamp, but you’ll most likely save both gas and time.
