Cheaper, Cleaner Alternatives to Gas

Gas prices are rising again, and could reach as high as $5 a gallon, but scientists are working diligently to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels by working to create fuel with renewable resources and even everyday waste.

Here are some of the substances that you could end up filling your gas tank with in the next several years, and they could be cheaper than gas, auto analysts say.

The Immortalizing Enzyme

In the early 1500s, according to legend, the Spanish explorer, Ponce de Leon, traversed Florida looking for the Fountain of Youth. He never found it. 500 years later, scientists are still searching for it. They haven’t found it either, but they might be getting close.

A certain anti-aging enzyme has captured the attention of the scientific community. Telomerase is the name of this “immortalizing enzyme.” There is no publicly traded company doing real telomerase gene-activation research now. Moreover, there is no guarantee that those who are working in this area will accomplish their goals of stopping or reversing the cellular aging process.

This is, however, an area that investors in transformational technologies should be monitoring closely.

PSA: Export Your Quicken 2007 Data Before Upgrading to Mac OS X Lion

I’ve talked in the past about the fact that the release of Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) will mark the end of Quicken compatibility on the Mac platform. In the absence of a workable solution from Intuit, your options will be to stick with OS X 10.6, switch to Quicken Essentials for Mac (no thanks!), run Windows on your Mac, or switch to another software package entirely.

Whatever you decide, please be aware that your Quicken 2007 data will become inaccessible the moment you upgrade to Lion. Thus, you need to export your data into an accessible format before making the jump. I’m bringing this up now because Apple has said that Lion will be available sometime in July, and it’s now July…

With that, have a great weekend, and a Happy 4th of July!

The table above shows: a) the number of OSHA enforcement inspections over the last five years for a sample of large U.S. companies, along with b) the number of employees at those companies (from Yahoo! Finance), and finally c) the number of OSHA inspections per 100,000 employees at those companies.

Note that when adjusted for the number of employees, Walmart has the best safety record by far among the group of retailers and manufacturers (Ford). Walma

Additional Thoughts on Risk

SB7 has some good observations about risk:

I was listening to the WSJ radio podcast while getting some dinner ready, and one of their reporters said, in the context of discussing Fukushima, that some of the engineers at the plant knew there was a risk in the plants older design and could conceivably face charges for not doing something about said risk.

This kind of talk really grinds my gears.  In any engineering situation there is always some risk.  You can have less risk, or more risk, but risk is not something you either have or do not have.

I will go one step further.  This ex post facto witch hunt aimed at folks who discussed risks  (an pogrom that occurs in nearly every product liability lawsuit with fishing expeditions through company memos) is the WORST possible thing for consumers concerned about the safety of their products and environment.  En

College as an Investment

We’ve talked in the past about how much your college degree is worth. Given the current economic environment, especially as it relates to employment opportunities (or lack thereof), I’d be willing to bet that many recent graduates are second guessing their decision to lay out the money required for a college degree.

According to a recent study from the Brookings Institute, however, higher education is a better investment than the alternatives, even for the “Class of the Great Recession.” Really? Really.

Jumping ahead to the punchline, the study concludes:

On average, the benefits of a four-year college degree are equivalent to an investment that returns 15.2 percent per year. This is

Forex Trading: EURUSD Moves Toward Channel Trendline Resistance At 1.4537

The EURUSD has moved steadily to the upside in the Asian session and looks to test the target channel resistance at the 1.4537.  Should the momentum continue look for this level/area to find profit takers.

The 5 minute chart is on the second leg higher for the new day. The first leg corrected 38.2% and held trendline support. This opened the door for additional momentum to the upside. The pair is currently in the the second leg.  Watch the 38.2% and the 50% for clues on the trends strength. If the price can hold the level, look for the possibility of continued bullish momentum.  The target being the channel trendline on tha hourly chart.

MSE to donate £35,000 to the campaign for financial education in schools – a political donation

For transparency, as it’s the site’s first ever ‘political’, as opposed to standard charity donation (see charity fund) I thought this was important to blog about. The site and I have been championing compulsory financial education in schools for a long time and now we’re in a practical position to do something to help – we’re putting our money where our mouth is.

Earlier this year, I was delighted to be involved in helping put together, launch and become co-sponsor of the first ever All Party Parliamentary Group of MPs to support this campaign (see more on the financial education APPG) and, due to MoneySavers’ help in writing to their representatives we managed to secure over 200 MPs joining, by far the biggest APPG of its kind on any subject.

With that huge weight behind it, the APPG MPs are now launching a committee process, akin to a select committee to interview key players, take evidence, investigate issues and provide a report to the Government on what’s needed and how feasible it is. As an APPG does n
