The Government has come under pressure as the cost of a litre of unleaded soared to almost 1.30 thanks to high global oil prices and this month’s VAT hike to 20% (see Cheap Petrol & Diesel guide).

Fuel duty already eats up 58.95p for every litre, on top of VAT of more than 20p. Labour chancellor Alistair Darling announced a further 1p rise this April in last year’s Budget.

Asked during a visit to the West Midlands yesterday whether he could do anything about the planned duty hike, Osborne said: “We can override it, we are looking at that.”

The Chancellor appeared to indicate any relief for motorists may be announced in his 23 March Budget, saying that “if we are able to do something about it we will do it before April”.

Osborne also confirmed ministers are considering a fuel stabiliser, so “the Government steps in to try to protect people from the effects” of volatility at the pumps by cutting the level of duty as oil prices rise and increasing it as they fall.

The Treasury later played down any suggestion Osborne was announcing an intention to scrap the rise.

“All taxes are kept under review as part of the budget process,” said a spokesman.

Prices went up by a 51, or 6.4%, in the last quarter of 2010 alone.

According to the AA, the increase was less than the previous quarter but added to the cost of driving ahead of fuel duty and VAT increases in January as well as the 1% increase in Insurance Premium Tax.

Young drivers were hit hardest with fully comprehensive premiums for 17 to 22-year-olds rising by more than 58% over the year to 2,251.

Third party, fire and theft policies, which are most commonly bought by young drivers, also rose by more than a quarter in the last three months with the average price for the year reaching 1,390, a rise of more than 70%.

Lately my wife has been complaining about the awful smell of home cleaning products. I agree with her; the harsh chemical smell is off-putting. So I bought a book called Make Your Place, by Raleigh Briggs, which has recipes for nice-smelling cleaning solutions, as well as skin care products, and home health remedies.

After deciding on the products I wanted to make – window cleaner, soft scrub, and all-purpose cleaner, I went online and ordered all the necessary ingredients and equipment: funnels, plastic squeeze bottles, spray bottles, vinegar, borax, castille soap, baking soda, and oils of peppermint, tea tree, lavender, and eucalyptus.
